I love to learn and I love to teach. I studied computer science for my undergrad and realized in my senior year that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in a cubicle. I switched majors and graduated with a BA in English with an emphasis on Middle English literature (from a Feminist perspective). I then wrapped up my Technical Writing Certificate and immediately launched into an MS in Instructional Design and Technology. Shortly thereafter, I went to work as a Lecturer in Communication Design and Internet Communication and Technologies. During this time I was the winner of the 2005 CELT Conference Exemplary Online Instruction (California State University, Chico) for my “CDES 270A: Introduction to Multimedia Design and Development” blended-learning course. I enjoyed the work that went into that course, and thoroughly enjoyed teaching, but felt that I needed to know more about the science and theories behind learning. So, I came to Virginia Tech and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. within the School of Education. I have a strong background in applying Gagne’s Events of Instruction and Keller’s ARCS model of motivation to address both aspects of Learning and Instruction. At this time, my teaching philosophy is grounded in studies based on Cognitive Information Processing (CIP) in conjunction with Situated Cognition theories, but I am dabbling in more moderate and social constructivist flavors (i.e., Vygotsky).
