Workshop Theme: Web Site Development

Faculty Development workshops within this theme provide hands-on activities related to Web page creation, design, and management for instructional purposes.

There are four main topic areas; Site/Page Planning, Site/Page Design, Site/Page Creation, Site/Page Management. This theme also includes topics on using the web for interaction and feedback. Additional Fall and Spring workshops provided coverage of intermediate or advanced topics. Summer 3-day workshops provide an opportunity to start personal projects for Course Enhancement.

Workshops in the Web Development theme are organized by topic area and participant skill level or proficiency with tasks necessary to perform the workshop's activities.

The table below indicates a range of skills that are presented in the FDI Summer Tracks C, D, E and H.

Site/Page Planning

Develop a web "site map" by;

  • understanding of Internet Client / Server model (web protocols)
  • functional understanding moving files between computers (FTP)
  • understanding of the underlying file structure (paths) of a web server
  • listing all desired content areas and component pages of your web site
 
Site/Page Design Select the appropriate design priniciples for your web pages by;
  • identifying your specific audience (hardware/software assumptions, purpose & goals of site content, level of content complexity)
  • select visual metaphors or objects that foster identity across your site
  • create basic user interface (visual consistency)
  • develop appropriate navigational structure
  • design or select individual page elements for appropriate functionality, usability and visual effectivness
 
Site/Page Creation (HTML)

Create web pages and customize their appearance and functionality by;

  • understanding of basic HTML tags (syntax) and used of Web Assistants
  • use of colors and other visual enhancements
  • integration of media objects (text, graphics, images, audio, video, animation)
  • use of basic interaction and feedback (forms and web utilities)
  • use of advanced web interaction tools (Shockwave, Java, Flash)
  • evaluate your site for effective navigation and visual presentation of the content
 

Site/Page Management

Maintain web site by;

  • proficient use of FTP or other file management tools
  • maintain hyperlinks thoughout the site
  • maintain archive copies of your site content
