Learn basic techniques of Desktop Publishing and go beyond word processing with hands-on activity using Adobe PageMaker 6.5.

Suggested Prerequisite for FDI Tracks: D and E

Using Adobe PageMaker 6.5

Adobe PageMaker is a complete writing, editing, design and production tool for creating professional quality publications.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of Word processing; Skill Level: Basic

Workshop Assumptions:
  1. Participants should have a working knowledge of basic word processing.
  2. Participants should be able to construct a simple document with text and imported graphics using Word Perfect or Microsoft Word.
  3. Participants should have a basic understanding of page layout and design issues or have questions concerning what constitutes good layout and design.

Workshop Objectives:
  1. Describe the Adobe PageMaker paradigm.
  2. Describe and demonstrate the possibilities of basic desktop publishing including cursory layout & design, working with text, images, and graphics.
  3. Provide hands-on opportunities for participants to create the beginnings of a newsletter, brochure, or other document that can be created effectively with in a desktop publishing program.
  4. Provide personalized consultation and direction for projects that are proposed by the participants.
  5. Provide resources and follow-up for the participants to support the inclusion of other media types (graphics, images, etc.) in their individual projects.

Instructional Outcomes:
  1. Participants will be able to describe the basic model of desktop publishing.
  2. Participants will be able to create a basic document in PageMaker containing text, graphics, and images.
  3. Participants will have the tools to begin a project on their own using PageMaker.
  4. Participants will know how to get more assistance with PageMaker.
