Streaming Media: An Introduction to Streaming Audio and Video

  Workshop Description  
  Do you have audio, video, or audio-enhanced PowerPoint presentation files that you would like to make available via the web? Streaming media is often the perfect solution. This short course will focus on the software and steps required to convert existing audio and video files into various web-ready formats. This session will also provide you with the technical details and contact information for various streaming media services available at Virginia Tech as well as other places on the internet. Time investment issues and faculty support options for the creation of streaming media will be discussed. Hands-on activities will be an integral part of this session.

Participant Assumptions:
• Participants should have a basic knowledge of HTML and have created a basic web-page.
• Participants should have basic experience of uploading files to servers.
• Participants have a need to distribute streaming media for instructional uses.

Workshop Objectives:
• Provide an overview of streaming media.
• Discuss the technical tradeoffs when working with streaming media.
• Discuss the various formats and their qualities.
• Discuss tools and tips for creating and editing a video for streaming.
• Demonstrate encoding and uploading a streaming movie.
• Introduce streaming media service provided by VBS at Virginia Tech.

Instructional Outcomes:
• Participants will be aware of what is streaming media.
• Participants will be aware the trade-offs involving streaming media.
• Participants will know about the various media formats available for streaming.
• Participants will be able to use encode a video into Real Media video.
• Participants will be able to access a web-site with support information on streaming technologies.
